Since 2000, husband-and-wife design team Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings have been creating objects that combine minimalist forms with rich finishes and distinctive color palettes.

Their Colour Porcelain series, commissioned by Japanese brand 1616/Arita, was conceived after analyzing and documenting the porcelain decoration produced on the island of Kyushu since the 17th century. The rainbow-hued tableware collection is exemplary of their hyper-contemporary take on functionalism.

The Containers feature a grid pattern set against the porcelain’s natural delicate gray-white tone. Each container is topped with a lid glazed in a different hue – light blue, light rose and bright red. Representing an extraordinary fusion of Dutch design and Japanese craftsmanship, the set remains sturdy enough for everyday use, and is even microwave- and dishwasher-safe – a beautiful marriage of practicality and luxury.
